World Series
This was my first World Series game.
I was a freshman in college. My roommate’s father was an accountant for the Flyers and the 76ers. He procurred us tickets to game four of the Series. I recall watching each of the first three games on television in our dorm room. After the game one win by the Phillies, we had thoughts of seeing the final game of a sweep. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way.
This game was on a Saturday. We awoke very early to drive down to Larry’s house in the Northeast. His Fiat (without the stick knob) not only needed gasoline, but oil as well. I recall waking up Rubes to get some money he owed us so we could get fluids in the car. After dealing with a cranky sleeping college student, we drove to the service station to get fuel for the import.
When we arrived at his house, there was a distinct smell. It turns out the idiot at the station forgot to put the cap back on the oil tank. The entire engine was splattered. Lovely.
We took the train into the city and then the subway to the Vet. Our seats were in the 600 level right off of home plate on the third base side. We were up there.
An older couple in front of us had a small television, which was good to see replays on.
I recall being very disappointed that the Phils lost. Of course, the Orioles won the Series the following day.
Larry’s brother drove us back up the NE Extension to school.
