Exempting Police from Sitting on Juries
This is a bad idea. Senator Adler and Senator Conners want to do just that, however. They have sponsored S129. The rationale appears to be that prior to 1995 police were exempted. I am sorry, but that is not good enough for me.
If we exempt everyone who has political clout from juries, then juries will be composed of those of “lesser standing’. It serves our communities well to have everyone be part of the juducial process. If the good Senators would like to change the existing law, that is fine: get rid of the clause that allows elementary school teachers from opting out. Sans that, let police officers do their civic duty as citizens like the rest of us.
