Broder on Democrats

David Border, the prominent columnist of the Washington Post, provides a history lesson for Democrats in Sunday’s column, The Democrats and the Mule Rule.

The last two times Democrats have been beaten twice consecutively (Eisenhower in the 50s and Reagan in the 80s + Bush in ’88), Democrats have greatly shifted their focus off the old horse (Stevenson and Carter/Mondale) to new Democrats (Kennedy and Clinton). Broder states that is the only good news to come out of Tuesday’s election for the Democrats.

For a thoroughly chastised and seemingly clueless party, that is the only good news to be found. And there is one clear lesson the Democrats could learn from examining what helped them recover from those other two-term Republican presidents.

Broder points out what everyone is clamoring about these days, Democrats are going to concentrate on gubernatorial campaigns now that they are resigned to minority status in the House and Senate . . . again.
