The Oscars
First off, of all the films nominated this evening for the 78th Academy Awards show, I have seen but two: Cinderella Man and Crash. Gert dragged me to see Cinderella Man. It was okay. I am not a Russell Crowe fan, but I like Paul Giamatti. I had never heard of Crash until we rented it at Blockbuster a few months ago. I like thrillers and suspense flicks. The jacket looked interesting. Within the first five minutes, I turned to Gert and said This movie sucks. By the end of the movie, I had changed opinions. I really liked this movie. It was different. Fresh. I liked that it was difficult to determine right and wrong. Like much in life, there is a lot that is not clear-cut.
Other than that, Gert saw and liked Pride and Prejudice. No surprise there. I don’t know if I am going to watch the Oscars tonight. It will not be my first choice, but it’s possible I’ll check in. Even so, I have made my predictions for the awards. These predictions are based on absolutely nothing. I will score how well I do.
FWIW, my guess at the over-under of blatant political comments from the lectern by someone other than host Jon Stewart is three. Stewart will not draw a large audience, I suspect as he is viewed as too “political” to draw in the fringe. In a year when Hollywood has packaged a lot of films with a message (notice that the blockbusters were limited this year), Stewart was not the best choice of a host.

Well, there’s been one award presented and Clooney went off. Sigh . . . he is nominated for two other awards. It could be a long night.

Have they cut some of the categories? My scorecard has no winners for Screenplay-Adapted and Screenplay-Original. I am pretty certain that only Director and Best Film are left. Hmm . . .

There were 24 categories this evening. I correctly picked seven of them. That is better than a blind pick. Most categories had five selections, so blindly picking should have resulted in 20% (four or five).
Even though I had seen but two of the films, I had heard enough to know that Brokeback Mountain was a favorite and that Hoffman’s portrayal of Capote was well received. That probably explains my beating the odds.
Had I known more, however, I would not have selected Felicity Huffman. Gert had Reese Witherspoon all the way.
I updated the ballot to reflect the winners in addition to my selections.
