The Definition of Bias
Ack! The latest AP article about New Jersey taxes is poor journalism.
New Jersey voters support dedicating all money earned from last year’s sales tax increase to property tax relief and borrowing $450 million to fund stem cell research, according to a new poll.
Earned?
Merriam-Webster defines earn as:
1 a : to receive as return for effort and especially for work done or services rendered b : to bring in by way of return <bonds earning 10 percent interest>
2 a : to come to be duly worthy of or entitled or suited to <she earned a promotion> b : to make worthy of or obtain for <the suggestion earned him a promotion>
The state of New Jersey did not earn this money; rather, it taxed this money. That is a huge difference.
When the “objective press” frames a 16% tax increase as money the state earned, it is no wonder reform never occurs here.
