Learned Taste Aversion
During my first semester in college, I took Psychology 101. Mom had told me that college was a time to experience a wide berth of things I would likely never have the opportunity to do again. Learning about subliminal advertising was the highlight of this course. But we also learned about learned taste aversion.
Many people claimed to have had the experience and since then many have shared such things. Gert has had many examples to share. But it wasn’t until this week that I actually experienced this phenomenon.
Last Sunday was the Super Bowl. Gearing up for it, I smoked a couple fatties, some Scotch eggs, and wings. I enjoyed eating this food. I began watching the game. I then became ill. I have been ill all week. Headaches, chills, and achiness have plaqued me. It’s been awful.
And since then, that smoked food has been in the refrigerator. Each time I smelled the food, I became nauseous. When Gert heated some of it up, my stomach turned. I tossed the food yesterday, on trash day.
I think it’s going to be a while before I smoke any food. I know it’s all in my head and it’s not related to be illness, but my goodness, I cannot even think of eating smoked food right now.

I’ve eaten plenty of smoked food in the year since this happened. Yet, I have not had another fatty since. Learned taste aversion indeed.
