A Tuesday in November

Apple Honey Brined TurkeyLast night I defrosted an enhanced frozen turkey. I’ve been reading a lot about turkeys and decided to test a plan I developed.

This morning I made an apple honey brine and placed the almost thawed turkey into it. I will pull it from the brine in a few hours (as late as I can remain awake) and put it in the refrigerator to air dry. Tomorrow afternoon I will pull it, place it on the rotisserie, and then smoke this at about 325° for a couple hours.

We do not do Thanksgiving at our home these days, although I love the meal. We will have our family Thanksgiving meal sometime near the date. This is my practice run of the guest of honor.

Interestingly, when I ran to the market to pick up the apple juice for the brine, I asked how much more I needed to spend to “earn” my free turkey. The girl said I had spent $289 and some change. I need to get to $300 by Thanksgiving. No problem. She announced I had about $25 left. Sigh . . .

Beetle Completes Her HomeworkOne of the things that impressed me about my daughter’s school at the orientation was the announcement that there was going to be homework in Kindergarten. Awesome!

Beetle is so interested in doing her schoolwork I usually miss it as she has it done before I arrive home. A weird day today produced a situation where she hadn’t completed it by the time I arrived. It’s such a joy seeing her do her work. She is able to explain why she did what she did. Beetle even identified an interesting corollary she can share tomorrow with her teacher. Being teachers, we know those little extras that impress. ;)

Also blogged on this date . . .
