Lies, Damn Lies & Statistics

Another blizzard rolled through here this weekend. There’s enough of it on the ground to incapacitate the county once again as area schools are closed tomorrow. It’s bittersweet. Sure, who doesn’t enjoy a snow day? At the same time, we are already backing up to July for the school year. All these days are being added onto the end after the state tests. Students let out a big sigh after NJ ASK.

Anyhow, how much snow did we get? Read the Daily Journal and one sees Millville measured in at 22″ and Vineland 24″. The News has the same figures quoting the National Weather Service.

For me, it didn’t feel like it was that much. When I look at the 72-hour window at NOAA, I see considerably less accumulation.

Blizzard Snow Accumulation

How much did we get? Who knows, but we’ll be playing in it tomorrow after sleeping in.

Snowed In

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

The blizzard arrived overnight. Last weekend we had pretty snow. Even at the beginning of this storm, it was peaceful out. Not so right now. There’s no reason to go outside and shovel yet.

Almost everything is closed. The Millville Public Library closes when someone sneezes. But even the mall has closed for the day. Fritz’s exercise class is shut down as is the pool. A birthday party was moved to next week.

The one thing that is up and running is The Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. They announced yesterday that nothing would keep the curtain closed. The show must go on and all that jazz. Yeah well, we’re not making the drive in this weather. Grrrr . . . another set of tickets down the drain.

Apparently the Apocalypse Is Coming

Empty ShelvesI think it was in 1996 when we had 30″ of snow. I lived alone in an apartment at the time. There was a state of emergency, and the roads were closed for two or three days. I was not prepared. I recall eating the last can of corn I had and realizing that if the emergency lasted another day, I was going to be knocking on someone’s door to borrow something to eat.

Not much has changed in the 14 years since. Every time Hurricane Schwartz proclaims the storm of the century is upon us, things seem to peter out. Nevertheless, this year certainly seems to be the exception. We have had some snow already; it sounds like we’re going to have some more this weekend.

Empty ShelvesTrying a change of pace, I went out shopping this evening to stock up for the weekend. We have food at home, but there are a few new recipes we’re going to try out this weekend, as usual, and needed to pick up some ingredients.

Apparently, I was too late. There was no produce, meat, or bread at Shop Rite this evening. Surprisingly, there were milk and eggs. I got most of what I wanted save some ground beef and bread. We’ll scurry to get some tomorrow before the blizzard arrives. Good thing our case of honeybells arrived last evening. Fresh Florida juice has been exploding in my mouth all day!

At least the children will have milk this weekend. :)
