Every time I think I may return to logging geocaches online again, I am reminded why that isn’t a good idea . . . Speaking of geocaching, the Star~Ledger had a nice article highlighting the game with Ericles . . . Funny partisan political sign . . . FWIW, I haven’t visited Google Buzz in some time. Guess what? I don’t need such a service in my life. Go figure! . . . I’ve just reached agreement with an author in Australia to have some of my photographs published this coming November. The guy is writing his second barbecue book and requested to use several of my food photos. Wow! . . . Not that I need convincing, but Bob Dylan is a master songwriter. When I Paint My Masterpiece and It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue are just phenomenal! . . . Some Apple employee leaves his iPhone 4 prototype in a bar, and Gizmodo is to blame? I see this being tossed out with prejudice . . .

As a man who has been blogging for seven years, has been embroiled in many “discussions”, and certainly does not lack an opinion, discussing the merits of humbleness may seem to be an odd topic for me. Despite my online personality, I think most folks find me a humble person. I think I am as well.

Recently, I found myself instructing my class on this topic. Students in recent years have made a link between Terrell Owens and myself. Other than our surnames, there isn’t much we have in common. I use T.O. as an example of how not to behave. True, he has phenomenal talent that has earned him millions of dollars, yet he cannot keep a job. At least a few of those were due to his behavior. For my students, I caution them from thumping their own chests.

Yet, there was a student who wanted to show off. It’s a delicate task in modifying others’ behaviors. I found myself saying the following:

Your task is to be so remarkable that others take note and comment on your performance; not for you to point out to others what you have done.

As I reflected on what I had said, I realized that summarizes my issues with those who proclaim FTF (first to find) in geocaching.

While I panned Crush It!, I have to hand it to Gary Vaynerchuk. He remembered to e-mail me about something. The personal touch lends to his credibility . . . Tech Crunch has an interesting article about an open database of places, logged by coordinates. This will effectively kill Waymarking, as far as I can see. Will Groundspeak be able to keep up with the likes of Foursquare and Twitter? . . . Taxes are up, government “revenue” is down. There’s a correlation there . . . Despite last evening’s loss, the Phillies offense is awesome! . . . Speaking of baseball, the Mets-Cardinals 20-inning game was a lot of fun to watch . . . The election for Vineland’s BOE certainly has raised the tempers of some . . . I was reminded that I used to be a member of the KISS Army . . . Watching your child play softball for the first time is something I will remember for a long time. I am so proud of my little one . . . It’s Monday and I am so thoroughly exhausted as though it’s the end of the week . . . Is anyone surprised that Goldman Sacs bet against what it was selling? Goldman is so embedded in government (just ask Greg Craig), it’s dangerous . . .

A sure sign we are watering down things too far: Scrabble will now permit proper nouns. Heresy! . . . Sam Cutler opens up about Altamont. Love the interview, will read the book . . . Why is Bad Santa being shown in April? . . . Did you know that New Jersey has a law that requires parents to tell the state whether or not their children have health insurance? What business is that of the state if I am not applying for assistance? . . . Whoever is announcing the Reds-Marlins game on MLB Network tonight is boring. My goodness, there is just no pep in the announcing . . . I have become a Turbo Tax convert. Easy peasy . . . My Phillies are off to an awesome start. And the new saying is every fifth day is a Halladay . . . Missed out on going to Wine Library yesterday. ‘Twas 5k away, but decided to go the other direction. There’ll be another day . . . Rochester is a go for July! Approximately shutterspots on that loop . . . Speaking of spots, Gert gave the okay to drive to Florida and stop for shutterspots. She truly does love me! Ah, but she’ll get the dinner in Savannah she wants because I love her just as much . . . Yet another trip to Lake Placid is in the works too. The eCache household is doing its share to stimulate the economy this summer . . . BTW, the replacement AC/furnace we installed last year is the gift that keeps on giving. We received cash back from the state because of the energy efficiency to the tune of 52% of the cost. We also earned another $1500 off our federal taxes. All that coupled with lower energy bills. Yeah, we’re green . . . While at BJ’s, I learned that Verizon offers 15% off its cell plans for teachers. No, we cannot double it because we are both teachers. FWIW, they are being very evasive about the Incredible. As soon as it comes out, we’re smartphone owners . . .

The organizational campaign is still underway. What I once thought was a summer project is turning into a massive job. Believe it or not, I can see the end . . . I think. I have tentatively set a completion date for uploading all the photographs and videos. That is the end of June.

Tonight I found another cache of files I had forgotten. I stumbled across this video clip. I sometimes get into video mode accidentally when I juggle my gear. I think that is what happened here. I was able to determine with some work what geocache this is.

Geo-location is a crowded market. It seems like every app these days includes geo-location data, whether it is needed or not.

Admittedly, I have an interest in geo-location. Shoot, my free time is consumed by it. The hot trend now is checking in at various locations. It’s valuable information for businesses, but right now other than futzing around, there isn’t much for the end user other than the kewlness factor.

Like all emerging markets, there’s a rush to win the early adopters. Will it be Gowalla, Foursquare, Brightkite, etc.?

There’s a new player entering the market. Good ol’ Jeremy Irish is putting Groundspeak right smack in the middle of all this with its new service Whibbit. Gotta love those premium memberships footing the growth into new markets, eh?

I’ll be interested in seeing how this is marketed. It appears Whibbit is going to expand into the asking questions end of things. While that appeals to some, I suspect it will not draw a heavy user base.

Someone shared the latest hilarity over at Terracaching.com with me. Scott O’Connell, AK’s willing stooge, lamented that no one has created a TC app for the Droid.

I am hoping that someone will write a decent android caching app, that is open to whichever site…

Why would anyone spend an iota of time developing for TC.com? The site’s creator doesn’t even develop for the site. There’s been no development whatsoever in years.

AK and ScottO have shown disdain for site users who wanted to develop tools to enhance the experience. It’s been more than two years since I made that request. It would take less than a second of processor time and no coding since I wrote the script. Of course, my project stalled. My understanding is that the guy who took it over after me abandoned it too for lack of assistance from TC.com.

So again, why would anyone even consider this abandoned relic of a geocaching site in his coding time?
