Hallelujah

Governor Christie’s budget address yesterday was a breath of fresh air. Never before have I heard a politician speak so frankly and honestly, although I do note that Governor Corzine was honest in his budget address I attended at Rowan in 2006. It is my hope that Christie is able to follow through with his plan; Corzine did not and the problem became worse.

Christie took on NJEA. Why does the NJEA president have an invitation to the budget address? She is not a government employee. Hallelujah!

Next year’s budget will be 9% less than this year. Hallelujah!

One area I have an issue with in pension reform. While a lot was said and some items addressed, yes I will be paying, Governor Christie is not making the state obligated payment to the fund. The state skips this regularly. This is a large part of the pension problem. While payouts are too numerous, they wouldn’t hurt nearly as much if the fund had the missing billions of dollars the state owes.

Another issue is the apparent $159 million grant program Christie has in the budget. This is an easy cut to the budget, which will reduce spending even further. Christmas tree slush funds have no business in a state budget. Get rid of it, sir!

Christie took the first step. Of course, none of this means a thing if local governments increase taxes. Christie said there will be tools for municipalities to reduce spending. Millville City Commission take note: you cannot raise taxes to bridge the gap of lost “revenue” from the state. You must reduce the size of government. Spending needs to decrease, not remain flat. Don’t manipulate things to keep from laying off employees. There are only so many block parties that can be reduced before real jobs are affected. And Mayor Shannon, the governor spoke about the importance of having recreational opportunities this summer; don’t close Union Lake (even though the goose poop will) stating you are cutting spending while the Recreation Department remains fully staffed.

Likewise, state agencies need to heed the same advice. Cuts to public transportation does not mandate a 25% fare increase. Where are the cuts within the department? The state is not going to give you the money; don’t just find a new funding source (riders). Cut the overhead. No state employee should have a salary larger than the governor. No one.

The budget address was refreshing. Thank you Governor Christie. There is still a lot of work left to do. This is just the opening chapter to resolving New Jersey’s woes.

P.S.
NJN is a taxpayer-funded enterprise. It posted video of the budget address. Thankfully. I missed the broadcast and the re-broadcast. The address is public business and the video is public property. Why does NJN not permit one to embed the video? This is not proprietary content. And fwiw, I support the governor’s desire to privatize NJN.

Ah, I found the video at the Asbury Park Press.

D’oh!

Forbes Magazine ranked the Millville-Vineland-Bridgeton metropolitan area as the second least-educated area in the United States. It is an alarming statistic. Locally, folks point to the lone used book store in the county as an example of why that is.

Today Christopher Shaud provided further evidence. Vineland Police issued a warrant for Mr. Shaud’s arrest. He is suspected of being involved in a robbery. Shaud turned himself in to the police. Shaud is a 32-year old adult.

Contributing to the area’s lack of brightness, Shaud forgot to remove the marijuana he was transporting from his body before subjecting himself to arrest. So, in addition to being arrested for the burglary, Shaud was booked for possession too.

Serving the Public

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Perhaps I am idealistic, but I assume those who run for elected office do so because they desire to serve the public. Perhaps there is a talent or a skill one feels he can share with his community.

Yes, elected office is altruistic.

Apparently, not everyone feels that way. Cumberland County Freeholder Jane Jannarone is quoted by Matt Dunn today as saying,

“The freeholders haven’t gotten a raise since 1974,” she said. “If the county no longer offered benefits to part-time workers and the real estate market continues the way it has been, would I run again? I don’t know.”

Such sentiment makes this constituent wonder what Ms. Jannarone’s impetus to represent us actually is. Is it to serve us or herself?

She isn’t alone in that either. Another Cumberland County freeholder, Joe Pepitone said:

As an elected official, (health benefits) are what goes along with the freeholder package, so to speak.

There you have it, fellow Cumberland County taxpayers. Your elected officials at work . . . for themselves.

Snowflake Swim

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Polar Bear SwimmersA few year’s ago I know I contemplated completing a polar bear plunge. It sounded interesting. I never entered one. This year when I heard the date for Millville’s Snowflake Swim I quickly entered it on the calendar, but I had no intention of bathing; I just thought it would be interesting to see.

And it was. Show up on time because things move quickly.

Fritz and I went down to Union Lake to take in the festivities. We had fun walking around in the snow for a few minutes. Then everyone assembled, darted into the water, and got out. Before we knew it, it was over.

Can’t blame anyone for the quickness of the event as it was cold out there and I was properly dressed. :) We found the thermal heating container (school bus) humorous. It appears all had a good time.

Cheers!

Snowed In

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

The blizzard arrived overnight. Last weekend we had pretty snow. Even at the beginning of this storm, it was peaceful out. Not so right now. There’s no reason to go outside and shovel yet.

Almost everything is closed. The Millville Public Library closes when someone sneezes. But even the mall has closed for the day. Fritz’s exercise class is shut down as is the pool. A birthday party was moved to next week.

The one thing that is up and running is The Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. They announced yesterday that nothing would keep the curtain closed. The show must go on and all that jazz. Yeah well, we’re not making the drive in this weather. Grrrr . . . another set of tickets down the drain.
